Iran, the woman under the wave. Correspondence from the country that scares everyone today

I went to Iran at the invitation of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic to write "what I see with my own eyes". In the hope that, in this way, something other than the Zionist-American anathema may appear in the press. Amen! When it was heard that I was going to a country where "women are being stoned to death" or where "a war is about to break out", the label of the sure victim of the Persian PR was stuck on my forehead.

However, I came back alive (there has been no armed attack in the meantime) and emotionally balanced enough (I have not seen executions in the public square, so I have some post-traumatic stress disorder). But these discussions have given me some measure of the hyperbolized perception of a country that is said to growl at everyone.

The fact that you need an immaculate passport for an Israeli visa has the meaning of a political and civic quarantine. You get a temporary passport if you want to go to Iran. That's how it sounds, but if you don't get stuck in this detail, if your palms don't sweat uncontrollably, and you still go to the consulate to get interested, you're almost resolved. Basically, you easily get your tourist visa, even from the airport. And if I add the fact that from two low-costs (Bucharest-Istanbul-Tehran) you have reached the Persians, here is a first idea about the relaxation with which you can go to be a tourist there.

Why go to Iran?

"Is the woman?" Is the drink? & Quot; Ivan Turbinca asked. Not really. If you want an unforgettable all inclusive experience, go to Bulgaria. In Iran, women walk hidden under wide textiles. Theoretically, they are only allowed to expose their face and hands. No collarbones, no ears, no neck.

However, I have seen in Iran some of the most beautiful women in my career as a journalist for women's magazines. Velvety skin, in an unusual shade, pale copper, devilish green eyes and that disturbing kohl that makes the Iranian eyes a little more erogenous than the collarbones. Perfect eyelashes, well-groomed hands, and that's why you, as a tourist, want to wear a hijab on your head, so, as an experience, that you can feel on your skin what it's like to have & quotmister & quot, lost with the sexual revolution around.

Finally, when the temperature reaches over 30 degrees, the mystery becomes a burden, especially when you see that some wear & quotpusheshe eslami & quot, a large black garment from head to toe. By contrast, men enjoy a cheerful freedom, I also identified the famous line of jeans with the lap left and the belt in the middle of the buttocks. The fashion industry has no potential here. There is almost no variety, style is a matter of detail, not look. The multitude of jewelry stores (beautiful to cry and expensive bad) probably addressed the underground market of women among themselves, in their domestic space (parties are officially segregated by sex, men do not mix with women at the wedding, for example ). The social function of jewelry is related to a register of status (of course) and intra-female competition (& my share is more valuable than yours & quot), not one of seduction. In fact, the hijab is meant to cover the neck and shoulders. Everything that pulsates (wrist, fold) is censored. You look at a woman and you see only monochrome, flat surfaces.

Iran has a 2D aesthetic. Nowhere will you see naked women, the police are vigilant and can detain a woman dressed inappropriately, until her relatives come to pick her up from the ward and bring her more decent clothes. The problem is that temperatures can reach over 30 degrees, and a black chador is all you could want. For tourists, however, only the scarf that covers the head, as much as possible, is mandatory there.

But the chador is not a statement of ostracism. Many Iranians choose the most sober model, black from head to toe. Others put on colorful make-up and wear mottled scarves. In general, it's a matter of education: wear what you've been taught at home. But 60% of the university population is female in Iran, women are active in culture and enjoy celebrity as everywhere. Currently active culturally are a poetess, Parvin Etesami, a religious activist (Banu Amin), writer - Simin Daneshvar, Tahereh Saffar Zadeh (and translator), a film director - Pouran Derakhshandeh, famous film and theater actresses eg Parvaneh Masoumi).

We met with Mrs. Hejazi, the president of the Department of Women and the Family within the Culture and Communications Organization, and asked her directly what women's lives are like in Iran. He explained that the country is implementing a policy of reducing the birth rate, that contraception through drugs is widely practiced, but that abortion is prohibited. In Iran, illegal abortion is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. However, it can be done if the fetus is crawled or the mother's life is endangered. In case of rape, no.

Under these conditions, it is certain that illegal abortions are practiced, even after the four canonical months of pregnancy, when the fetus acquires, according to the Islamic religion, the soul.

Do women vote in Iran? Yes. I work? Of course. They have many journalists, doctors, a Minister of Health (Marzieh Vahid Dastjerd), about four high-level counselors and many officials. Of course, more can be done, the female resource is underused. Iran is still a patriarchal society in which women do not have a voice. Other horrible details? Adultery is forbidden by law, it is punished by whipping or hanging. Death is "recommended" in case of incest or rape.

It's hard to divorce, you can only guess the intimate dramas behind the facade. On the street, only those who are engaged or married are allowed to hold hands. The girls marry virgins and find it difficult to divorce. "The age at which marriage ends, by the age of 30," an English teacher told me, (delighted to have come across a tourist from whom he can learn details about European decadence). The young people's parents don't put so much pressure on them to see them at home, they also understand that it's hard, including material, but if you didn't choose too much inspiration, that's it. You don't have much to do. "Do you have to marry your boyfriend or girlfriend?" he asks me, with an emotional naivete. "No, we can break up without a hassle," I say, a little defiantly. "What's the point of life if you don't have someone to get along with?" I continued. "That's right," the provincial teacher (Shiraz) replies melancholy, after which he apologizes for the students waiting for him. He had come with them to the city of Persepolis, to meet the tourist schoolchildren and to speak English. He would probably give a lot of high marks, because in Iran the sociability is overwhelming, even the primary school children jump on tourists without any shyness and ask them if they are married or why they do not convert to Islam.

Anti-Americans?

Yes, to the tip of the nails. And the Iranians don't make it a secret. I saw huge graffiti on the blocks, with anti-American messages. But they do not open the subject or say it more jokingly in friendly discussions. At official meetings, we were diplomatically told that "Iran is a peaceful country" and that "we are victims of American propaganda." Instead, patriotism is palpable. Seyed Bathaei, our bonhomie guide, had fought as a volunteer since the age of 17 on the front lines in the Iraq-Iran war. Likewise, Mr. Alireza Shiravi, head of the Foreign Press department. He had fought in the war voluntarily and had been taken prisoner in Iraq for 8 years. He spoke proudly of this experience.

Urban landscape

Tehran is a city with a flawless infrastructure, with impeccable highways that pass through people's balconies if they feel like it, with public lighting in all shades, an attempt at futuristic aesthetics with huge graffiti representing portraits of political heroes and exemplary cleanliness. Iranians are an educated and hardworking people. Khomeini and Khamenei are the tutelary figures of highways, residences, vegetable markets or milestones. It is a modern city, with inhabitants for whom the pride of record-breaking constructions, although it does not equal that of the Saudis, is visible.

Of course, if you're lucky, you can meet Ali, the fastest boot-maker in the world (also listed in the Book of Records) with his very green mobile desk. He is fickle and poses more like Vodianova.

Prejudice and judgment

What the world doesn't know is that Iran is not just an oil well and a few azure-colored pottery workshops, or a geopolitical baubau. Iran is a country where biochemistry research is at the top, it is one of the leading drug manufacturers in the world and a place where industry and robotics research are also in a global pole position. My visit to the Royan Institute, which specializes in reproductive biomedicine and stem cells, surprised me: the first sheep cloned in 2006, a goat cloned in 2009, transgenic goats, calves in vitro. an entire neozoology at the disposal of medicine. In the waiting room, several dozen women with fertility problems.

Fortunately, there is no politics in this field. Iran is among the top 10 countries in stem cell discoveries. There are exchanges of experience, American professors come to conferences, students come to scholarships at the Royan Institute. In nanotechnology, Iran has performances and discoveries that place it in 15th place in the world. I was amused by the introduction that the spokeswoman for the Royan Institute made. In Iran it all starts & quotin the name of God & quot. But God has nothing to do with the future. Nor with freedom of expression. Iranians are the fourth most active blog in the world. It's true that you don't get on Facebook when you want to, but it's not impossible. You need to install software that removes the filter introduced by the authorities to block social networking sites, then it's simple. Socialize as much as you want. The rest of the internet is free, they have a fairly varied press (with many lifestyle magazines, decorations, recipes), a large news television (Press TV) that broadcasts in English and Persian where we were greeted by a producer in English of Oxford. At the hotel, when you don't just watch Persian soap operas, you can watch all the stations on CNN, BBC, Euronews, everything you want. What censorship are we talking about?

The Museum of the Treasure, necessarily, with all the jewels of the Persian royal dynasties gathered together. It is said that the combined value of all those treasures is enough to buy the United States.

Milad Tower, recently opened to tourism, one of the tallest television towers in the world. An architectural gem.

I went to a book fair in Tehran, an area of several hectares where all the publishing houses in the world, from America to China, exhibited. If you wanted to know the availability of a title, you lined up nicely at the girls' kiosk and asked. If you were a man, you would go to the boys. Not even intellectual concerns allow physical proximity. If you are not related to a man, it is good to stay away, and it is not allowed to shake hands amicably when you meet someone. It's more of a blunder than a protocol. It is good to know this protocol before arriving in this country. I made a mistake, but Seyed, our guide, answered my handshake. But the rules are pretty strict, and I think it was an exception.

Iranians read a lot and I was stopped a few times at the fair to ask where I came from. When they found out that from Romania, the refrain was (obviously) & quotHagi & quot bonus & quotEminescu & quot. Not bad. How many Romanians have read Sadegh Hedayat? Which is very cool, by the way, with its nihilism. antecioranian. In addition, the people on the street speak decent English, with which they cling to you to find out where you come from. They are sociable to God, more than once the school children camped on a Romanian in the group and did not give up until they all took an individual picture with the exotic character. Because the Iranians like to pose. Each group of more than two people has a camera that they abuse. It's a simple and fun form of entertainment, as cute as the Iranian idea of a picnic: "by the side of the road," literally. Maybe they read the Strugatki brothers, maybe not, it is certain that you can sometimes see dozens of tents placed in the park, sometimes in parking lots with a patch of greenery, or almost on the sidewalk, where people & quoties in the air & quot. On the left and right of the desert road between Esfahan and Tehran it was the same: the car with the doors open, a press, a bottle of something fruity, and in front the prospect of a bare mountain, almost without landscape variation, but good mood and socialization. I also caught a birthday in a beautiful park in Tehran, with cake, candles and "Happy Birthday" on a bench.

Make your cinema

If you are a cinephile, you cannot ignore Iran. Even if it has the closed air from the documentary & quotThis is not a film & quot by Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, - the autobiographical story of a director waiting for his verdict (film also screened in Bucharest a few weeks ago, at the Documentary Film Festival), - Iranian cinema is one one of the most productive and best in the area. Religious censorship is in shape, however, Iranian films reach the forefront of public attention not because of a political message, but because of intrinsic aesthetics.

Abbas Kiarostami, the director of "Compliant Copy," for which Juliette Binoche won the Palme d'Or in 2010, was described by Martin Scorsese as "the highest level of cinema." But perhaps the most famous film product of this country is Golshifteh Farahani, the naive actress in the "Body of Lies" (2008), who today can not return to Iran due to the dress worn at the Oscars. Too short. Golshifteh Farahani also appears in the gorgeous film "Chicken have plums" by Marjane Satrapi (a must-see, she was with us at the French Film Festival).

By the way, the plum chicken is sensational. I'm not a fan of kebap (the main option out there) but & quotpoulet au prunes & quot e.

In general, Iran eats a lot of mutton, chicken, occasionally fish, but it's not great. A delicious Bakhtiari kebap (after the names of the last pastors who still practice in transhumant Iran) is not to be missed. The sweets are a little. too sweet for the taste of a European, but worth trying & quotgaz & quot, the halvita specific to Esfahan. Shiraz wine is no longer found in Shiraz, but raspberry-flavored beer acceptably replaces the absence of alcohol.

Because you don't go to Iran to eat and drink. Not even to rest.

4. Helps prevent or treat allergies

The results of numerous studies have shown that stalks have promising anti-allergic effects that can be attributed to their anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. A 2009 study published & # 238nJournal of Medicinal Food found that onions and onions are effective in impacting the various events responsible for allergic reactions.

When sutin extract was administered to mice, they showed reduced histamine release and other benefits related to common allergic symptoms. A substantial reduction in lipid peroxidation was observed in the lungs and a higher level of protective antioxidant activity was observed, especially the deoxidation activity of the superoxide. This means that hesitations and onions can help reduce the symptoms of certain allergies.

Iran, unprecedented warning. "We have secret weapons. Let the dirty enemy know: the first mistake will be the last! ”

& bdquoOur deterrent actions and the secret weapons we have have kept the enemy dirty 300 miles from our borders, on the outskirts of Hormuz. The enemy should know very well that he should not test Iran's fighting ability, because his first mistake will be his last.& rdquo; was the bombastic statement of General Sabahi Fard.

He spoke on Wednesday in front of guests at a forum in Tehran, and his statements come just two days after the head of the Iranian army was also extremely clear.

& bdquoThe Iranian army will undoubtedly provide a strong response to any enemy aggression against our country, be it on land, water or air. We will make you regret your intentions& rdquo; said General Gholam Ali Rashid, who warned the Americans to keep their distance from Iran.

Iranian culture: traditions, features

Written sources give the right to believe that Iran's history is at least five millennia long. On this earth was once the famous Persia, familiar to all in the fairy tales of the East. The state has played a key role in the region since the time of the Middle Kingdom, and Iran's culture has become one of the most unique and significant in the Middle East.
Islamic State, Iran respects the requirements of the Muslim religion in everything. Islam is the one that dictates the rules of behavior and the norms of architecture, subjects for painting and music.

At the table with kings or mermaids?

In the stories told by the Greeks, the food often appears in connection with some much-loved heroes, led by Heracles, whose fame as an eater - along with his frequent association with various animals - makes him very suitable to become a comedy character. Closer to the human condition, the Great Persian King becomes the paradigm of imperial appetite, a special combination of greed, curiosity and refinement, which we will later find in the hostile tradition of some of Rome's emperors: the passage from Historia Augusta in which monochrome feasts are evoked or, on the contrary, polychrome, by Elagabal, belongs to the same folklore attesting to the envious and hypercritical fascination that accompanies over the centuries, to the present day, the rich and powerful who lead the world.

Gastronomic detectives

The Persian kings were thus credited by the Greeks with a phenomenal appetite, doubled by an impatient curiosity about culinary innovation, but also with a royal boredom that made them lose their appetite quickly. Dareios, the Great King, would have formed a team of true gastronomic detectives, whose only mission would have been to discover new dishes in the wide world. From Greece, where most culinary refinements - at least until the conquests of Alexander the Great - were, in essence, ingenious solutions to a diet of people, if not poor, anyway simple and traditionally economical, such excesses were viewed with one eye rather critical.

Ruined by a dinner party

Athenaios quotes Herodotus in connection with information that may be exaggerated, but it is hard to believe that it is completely false. Namely that those of the Greeks who hosted Xerxes and invited him to dinner ended up in a wooden hoe, being even kicked out of their houses. This was the case with those on the island of Thasos, who, because of their possessions on the mainland, were forced to accept Xerxes' army and invite the king to dinner. Antipatros, one of the leading Thasians, spent four hundred talents on a single dinner. Four hundred talents was an enormous amount of silver: the annual tribute that all the cities of the Delio-Attic League together paid before the war with Sparta did not exceed this amount. Moreover, poor Antipatros is also robbed, because the precious metal tableware with which he honored his high guest was confiscated at the end of the meal by the soldiers of the Great King's guard. We understand why, says Herodotus, where Xerxes ate two tables, the city was impoverished.

Good party management

But unlike many of his countrymen, Herodotus was not deceived by appearances, as is sometimes believed by those who confuse his pleasure as a narrator with credulity. He observes with sagacity, for example, that the feast called "of the king" seems to anyone to hear of him as exceptionally rich, yet, when examined closely, he is very thoughtful and economical. For the king has a thousand victims slaughtered daily, including horses, camels and oxen, donkeys, deer, and an enormous number of sheep add a large number of birds - including the Arabian ostrich, a huge animal, but also geese , roosters and chickens. From all this, the king's customers receive reasonable portions, and take what is left with them for breakfast the next day. But most of the meat is used in the yard to feed the troops of lightly armed spears and soldiers that the king keeps next to him. The king's suffragettes divide meat and bread in equal portions, because, says the ancient author, just as mercenaries receive money to support themselves, and soldiers receive food from the king as if it were money. Likewise in the courts of high-ranking Persians, all the food is put on the table at once, and what remains after the diners have finished eating is distributed equally by the steward of the palace to each servant, who has such food for the whole day.

The king's birthday

Also from Herodotus learned Athenaios, as we learn from Book IX of Histories, that the Persian King invites a large number of guests once a year, namely on the anniversary of his birthday. The name of this holiday is tukta, in Persian, but the Greeks call it teleion, "fulfillment", and it is the only day of the year when the king is washed and perfumed on his head, and also gives gifts to the Persians. (ch. 110).

Provisions for the King's Banquet - detail of a bas-relief in Xerxes' Palace, Persepolis, Iran (6th-5th centuries BC)

Everyday bread

What most visibly distinguishes the Persian royal feasts from the Greek supper is, in fact, the abundance of meat.As the Greeks generally ate meat only on the occasion of sacrifices on religious holidays - butchers appear late and only in large urban agglomerations - the idea that even the Great King's servants eat meat daily could degenerate into an imaginary of "sardanapalic" feasts. from the Achaemenid court. Bread, on the other hand, was common in Greek meals. As I wrote here before, sitos was the cereal base of food, either porridge, unleavened unleavened bread, or breadcrumbs was opson, added and often optional: a handful of olives, a piece of cheese, a slice of fried meat for the holidays, all these were a treat, bread was essential. Lentils and peas were added as satiating starches. Boiled or breadcrumbs, flour from which bread was kneaded - either glue, cheese or various other ingredients on top, announcing the future pizza, or mushroom-shaped buns, or breads with cumin, cheese and olive oil, on which the Romans will call cubo, or streptikos, a braided bread, kneaded with milk, pepper and bacon.

A research published almost 20 years ago by Andrew Dalby with the irresistible title The Siren Feasts - the celebrations of the Sirens - records an incredible variety of breads: the bread in the oven was called hypnites, the bread baked with ridge - klibanites, the bread baked under the ashes spoditesscovergile are called eskharites, and pancakes - wheat teganite is called collix, and puddings are called alphita and khondros. Such a surprising variety can only be found in Greece with regard to the various sources of drinking water. Bread could be eaten as a dish, with a sauce of vinegar and oil, with or without mint, or with fermented fish sauce, garon. But daily bread and meat was a reprehensible luxury.

Mediterranean diet, yesterday and today

The truth is that, then as now, the famous "Mediterranean diet", which is gaining ground again before our eyes, has not only the merit of using sparingly and ingeniously the natural ingredients that any more comprehensive farm offers - olives and olive oil. , fresh vegetables and herbs, bread and fruit, fish and, more rarely, meat - but also to use them in full, without wasting anything, using even today's leftovers for tomorrow's meal. I was surprised to find enough ancient recipes that contemporary authors recover in recent culinary fashions: volumes like the one by Eugenia Salza Prina Ricotti, Meals and Recipes from Ancient Greece, published in 2005 by the prestigious Los Angeles Museum founded by J. Paul Getty, amply prove that Antiquity can be used interestingly to promote modernity, but vice versa.

A frivolous history of Belle Époque champagne

Economic prosperity, urban development, technological progress, but also extravagances without borders are typical Belle Époque ingredients. And champagne accompanies all social events: it is ubiquitous at anniversaries, family festivities, social gatherings. English King Edward VII enjoys it in ballet, the legendary courtesan Cora Pearl, also fondled by the "Horizontal Sea", bathes in the liqueur with aphrodisiac properties - as Marilyn Monroe would do two generations later.

This is the time when the big producers use the arts to promote sparkling wine. The painters Pierre Bonnard, Alphonse Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, Cezanne exhibit works in which champagne is a star. On the other hand, the popular press satirizes the defects of the elites, using the symbolism of that drink.

Dedicated waltzes are composed: "Charles Heidsieck Waltz", named after the famous champagne producer, is an orchestral piece performed in 1895, in honor of the then Austrian emperor, and enjoyed, obligatorily, with the sparkling wine of the house.

Gheorge Ghica drinks sparkling wine - and marries Liane de Pougy

The Parisian half-worlds - Emilienne d’Alençon, Cléo de Mérode, Caroline Otéro - delight in champagne, side by side with the ladies and gentlemen of high society. What could be more chic than that? Also under the auspices of the sparkling drink, Prince George Ghica, from the "Brigadier" branch of the family and nephew of Queen Natalia of Serbia, marries Folies Bergère star Liane de Pougy.

The Temple of Bubble Liquor is considered Maxim’s, the famous restaurant decorated in Art Nouveau style and opened in 1893 on rue Royale. Extravagances are part of the landscape: a certain Maurice Bertrand, nicknamed "Le Monsieur de Chez Maxim's", asks permission to organize the funeral of a good friend inside the place. The coffin is transported with great pomp to the great hall, and the coffins are invited to pay a last homage to the deceased. When the lid of the coffin is open, surprise: only "bottles of champagne" rest "inside, which are immediately opened and drunk in memory of the deceased.

Ingredient of company balls

Ballroom dancing is the order of the day, and Paris excels in this regard: the parties of the Marquis Boni de Castellane (Paul Ernest Boniface de Castellane), the Princess de Broglie (Marie Charlotte Constance Say, whose entourage was inspired by the writer Marcel Proust), the Duchess, are legendary. de Gramont or the "Persian" ones, by the Countess de Clermont-Tonnerre (married in 1878 to Raoul Chandon de Briailles, founder of the "Moët & Chandon" champagne house).

However, the mundane festivities do not stop at the gates of the City of Lights. In Biarritz and on the Cote d'Azur, in Budapest and Vienna, in German spas or in hunting lodges in Scotland, every opportunity for fun is "sprinkled" with champagne. On the Cote d'Azur, the press of the time mentions, as a miscellaneous fact, the festive arrangement made at the behest of a Russian aristocrat: a swan carved in ice, with a mountain of caviar above it and floating gracefully on a champagne lake.

Tango and demonstration flights

Around 1910, tango appeared in France and, despite its South American origins, is invariably accompanied by champagne. Princess de Broglie, a great lover of sparkling wine and in love with tango, won, in 1913, a Parisian gender contest.

Champagne is drunk at horse races, but also at the much appreciated car races. In the Michelin ads, it is written that the company's tires "drink obstacles" - and the famous rubber mascot is represented by a glass of champagne, full of shards and nails. And the beginnings of aviation are watered with effervescent wines. On the occasion of various demonstration flights, the crowd can read the names of the big brands of sparkling wine, printed on the fuselage of aircraft: Cliquot, Mumm, Roederer, Moët, Pommery.

In 1909, representatives of champagne producers organized an aviation week in Reims called the "Tournoi d'oiseaux" ("Bird Tournament"). Participants in the event, including the legendary Louis Blériot, who had just crossed the English Channel, each receive a magnum bottle. A few years later, the gesture of offering champagne will have unsuspected consequences at the Formula 1 awards ceremony.

The origin of "showers" Formula 1

The ritual of sprinkling the crowd with champagne, at the award ceremonies for the Formula 1 races, is a late echo of the Belle Époque spirit. In fact, champagne appeared in car racing in 1950, the date of the first World Gender Championship in Reims, in the Champagne region. Cousins Paul Chandon Moët and Frédéric Chandon de Brailles, more lovers of car racing, offer the winner then a bottle of Jeroboam (with the capacity of four ordinary containers) of Moët & Chandon champagne. The habit of offering the winning pilot a "champagne" became popular in the following years.

The first person to shake the bottle - which leads to the unexpected expulsion of the cork and the splashing of the crowd, who came to attend "24 Heures du Mans" - is the American Dan Gurney, in 1967. The incident has an outlet, and the pilots who follow him on the international catwalks they also sprinkle the crowd with effervescent wine. Exceptions today are the winners of the 500-mile circuit in Indianapolis, where the winner is traditionally given a bottle of milk, and those of the Bahrain Grand Prix, where the wine is replaced with sour orange juice. being the restrictions imposed by religion.

The New World, in effervescence

The madness called champagne inevitably encompasses the New World. In the United States, champagne consumption quadrupled between 1900 and 1909, despite exorbitant taxes, competition from local products, and the efforts of temperance leagues, which outlawed alcohol consumption.

The new millionaires drink it in huge quantities. It is said that in 1906, just before the devastating earthquake that destroyed three quarters of the city of San Francisco, the famous tenor Caruso, in the residence of the rich James Ben Ali Haggin, sang an opera "Pagliacci", with his hand resting majestically on a magnum of champagne. Effervescent is also drunk in Australia, right in the heart of gold mining. In 1909, a representative of the Heidsieck champagne house wrote at home, showing how, on payday, miners storm the premises to order "the best champagne."

Champagne and diamonds

"Belle Époque Perrier-Jouët" is an unmistakable French champagne brand: not only because of its specific flavor, but also because of the glass's design - a creation by Emile Gallé, a prominent figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Since 1902, when he began (and went down in history) his collaboration with Gallé, the "Perrier-Jouët" house has not ceased to collaborate with international artists and designers. Today, its premium champagnes go hand in hand with exclusive embroidery products, floral art, interior and clothing design, music, painting - but also luxury goldsmithing. In the Belle Époque spirit, the house boasts a "Van Cleef & Arpels" brooch, displaying 450 diamonds and 259 sapphires. The jewel reproduces the floral motif of Gallé's anemone - a white gold reflection of refined wine, which was also crafted, isn't it, as a jewel of the senses.

IRAN, THE WOMAN UNDER THE VALVE. Correspondence for the Thought in the country that scares everyone today

I went to Iran at the invitation of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic to write "what I see with my own eyes." In the hope that, in this way, something other than the Zionist-American anathema may appear in the press. Amen! When I heard that I was going to a country where "women are being stoned to death" or "a war is about to break out," the label of a sure victim of the Persian PR stuck on my forehead.

However, I came back alive (there has been no armed attack in the meantime) and quite emotionally balanced (I have not seen executions in the public square, so I have some post-traumatic stress disorder). But these discussions have given me some measure of the hyperbole perception of a country that is said to be growling at everyone.

The fact that you need an immaculate passport for an Israeli visa has the significance of a political and civic quarantine. You get a temporary passport if you want to go to Iran. That's how it sounds, but if you don't get stuck in this detail, if your palms don't sweat uncontrollably, and you still go to the consulate to get interested, you're almost done. Basically, you easily get your tourist visa, even from the airport… And if I add the fact that from two low-costs (Bucharest-Istanbul-Tehran) you have reached the Persians, here is a first idea about the relaxation you can go with to be a tourist there.

Why go to Iran?

“Is it women? Is it a drink? ”Ivan Turbincă asked.

Velvety skin, in an unusual shade, pale copper, devilish green eyes and that disturbing kohl that makes the Iranian's eyes a little more erogenous than the collarbones. Perfect eyelashes, neat hands, and that's why you, as a tourist, want to wear a hijab on your head, so, as an experience, that you can feel on your skin what it's like to have a "mystery", lost with the surrounding sexual revolution.

Finally, when the temperature reaches over 30 degrees, the mystery becomes a burden, especially when you see that some wear "pusheshe eslami", a large black dress, from head to toe. By contrast, men enjoy a cheerful freedom, I also identified with them the famous line of jeans with the lap left and the belt in the middle of the buttocks. The social function of jewelry is related to a register of status (of course) and intra-female competition ("mine is more valuable than yours"), not one of seduction.

For tourists, however, all that is required is the scarf that covers the head, as much as possible, there.

But the chador is not a statement of ostracism. Many Iranians themselves choose the most sober model, black from head to toe. Others wear colorful make-up and wear mottled scarves. In general, it's a matter of education: wear what you've been taught at home. But 60% of the university population is female in Iran, women are active in culture and enjoy celebrity like everywhere else. They currently have culturally active a poetess, Parvin Etesami, a religious activist (Banu Amin), a writer - Simin Daneshvar, Tahereh Saffar Zadeh (and translator), a film director - Pouran Derakhshandeh, famous film and theater actresses eg Parvaneh Masoumi).

We met with Mrs. Hejazi, the president of the Department of Women and the Family in the Culture and Communications Organization, and asked her directly what women's lives are like in Iran. He explained that the country is implementing a policy of reducing the birth rate, that drug contraception is widely practiced, but that abortion is prohibited.

Only those who are engaged or married are allowed to hold hands on the street. The girls marry virgins and find it difficult to divorce. "The age at which the marriage ends has risen to 30," an English teacher told me (delighted to have come across a tourist from whom he can learn details about European decadence). The young people's parents don't put so much pressure on them to see them at home, they also understand that it's hard, including material, but if you didn't choose too much inspiration, that's it. You don't have much to do. "Do you have to marry your boyfriend or girlfriend?" he asks me, with an emotional naivete. "No, we can break up without a hassle," I reply, a little defiantly. "What's the point of life if you don't have someone to get along with?" I continued. "That's right," the provincial teacher (Shiraz) replies melancholy, after which he apologizes for the students waiting for him. He had come with them to the city of Persepolis to meet the tourist schoolchildren and speak English. He would probably give a lot of high marks, because in Iran the sociability is overwhelming, even the primary school children jump on tourists without any shyness and ask them if they are married or why they do not convert to Islam…

Anti-Americans?

Yes, to the tip of your nails. And the Iranians don't make it a secret. I saw huge graffiti on blocks of flats with anti-American messages. But they do not open the subject or say it more jokingly in friendly discussions. At official meetings, we were diplomatically told that "Iran is a peaceful country" and that "we are victims of American propaganda." Instead, patriotism is palpable. Seyed Bathaei, our snowman guide, had volunteered for 17 years on the front lines in the Iraq-Iran war.

It is a modern city, with inhabitants for whom the pride of record-breaking constructions, although not equal to that of the Saudis, is visible.

Of course, if you're lucky, you can meet Ali, the fastest bootmaker in the world (also listed in the Book of Records) with his very green mobile office. He is fickle and poses more like Vodianova.

Prejudices and judgments

What the world doesn't know is that Iran is not just an oil well and a few azure-colored pottery workshops, or a geopolitical baubau. Iran is a country where biochemistry research is at the forefront, it is one of the leading drug manufacturers in the world and a place where robotics industry and research are also in a global pole position. My visit to the Royan Institute, which specializes in reproductive biomedicine and stem cells, surprised me: the first sheep cloned in 2006, a goat cloned in 2009, transgenic goats, in vitro calves… a whole neozoology at the disposal of medicine. In the waiting room, a few dozen women with fertility problems.

Fortunately, there is no politics on this ground. Iran is among the top 10 countries in stem cell discoveries. There are exchanges of experience, American professors come to conferences, scholarship students come to the Royan Institute. In nanotechnology, Iran has performances and discoveries that place it in 15th place in the world. I was amused by the introduction that the spokeswoman for the Royan Institute made. In Iran, everything begins "in the name of God." But God has nothing to do with the future. Nor with freedom of expression. Iranians are the fourth most active blog in the world. It's true that you don't get on Facebook when you want to, but it's not impossible. You need to install software that removes the filter introduced by the authorities to block social networking sites, then it's simple. You socialize as much as you want.

Not even intellectual preoccupations allow for physical proximity. If you are not related to a man, it is good to stay away, and it is not allowed to shake hands amicably when you meet someone. It's more of a blunder than a protocol. It is good to know this protocol before arriving in this country. I made a mistake, but Seyed, our guide, answered my handshake. But there are some pretty strict rules, and I think that was an exception.

Iranians read a lot and I was stopped a few times at the fair to ask where I came from. When they found out that from Romania, the refrain was (obviously) "Hagi" bonus "Eminescu". Not bad. How many Romanians have read Sadegh Hedayat? Which is very cool, by the way, with its ec antecioranian nihilism. In addition, the people on the street speak decent English, with which they cling to you to find out where you come from. They are sociable to God, more than once the school children encamped a Romanian in the group and did not give up until they all took an individual picture with the exotic character. Because the Iranians like to pose. Each group of more than two people has a camera that they abuse. It's a simple and fun form of entertainment, just as fun as the Iranian idea of a picnic: "by the roadside," literally. Maybe they read the Strugatki brothers, maybe not, it is certain that you can sometimes see dozens of tents placed in the park, sometimes in parking lots with a patch of greenery, or almost on the sidewalk, where people "go outside". To the left and right of the desert road between Esfahan and Tehran was the same: the car with the doors open, a mat, a bottle of something fruity, and in front the prospect of a bare mountain, almost without landscape variation, but good mood and socialization. I also caught a birthday in a beautiful park in Tehran, with cake, candles and "Happy Birthday" on a bench.

Make your cinema

If you're a movie buff, you can't ignore Iran. Even if it has the closed air from the documentary "This is not a film" by Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, - the autobiographical story of a director waiting for his verdict (film also screened in Bucharest a few weeks ago, at the Documentary Film Festival), - Iranian cinema it is one of the most productive and best in the area. Religious censorship is in shape, however, Iranian films reach the forefront of public attention not because of a political message, but because of their intrinsic aesthetics.

Abbas Kiarostami, the director of "Copie Conforme", for which Juliette Binoche won the Palme d'Or in 2010, was described by Martin Scorsese as "the highest level of cinema". But perhaps the most famous film product of this country is Golshifteh Farahani, the naive actress in "Body of Lies" (2008), who today can not return to Iran due to the dress worn at the Oscars. Too short… Golshifteh Farahani also appears in the gorgeous film “Poulet au prunes”, by Marjane Satrapi (a must-see, she was with us at the French Film Festival).

By the way, the plum chicken is sensational. I'm not a fan of kebap (the main option out there) but "poulet au prunes" is… so…

In general, a lot of sheep, chicken, and occasionally fish are eaten in Iran, but it's not great. A delicious Bakhtiari kebap (after the names of the last shepherds who still practice transhumance in Iran) is not to be missed. The sweets are a little too sweet for the taste of a European, but it is worth trying the "gas", the halvita specific to Esfahan. Shiraz wine is no longer found in Shiraz, but raspberry-flavored beer acceptably replaces the absence of alcohol…

Because you don't go to Iran to eat and drink. Not even to rest.

Daryus

Daryus is a Persian restaurant, which I passed many times without realizing that it is more than a very small terrace on the boulevard, or a passing cafe. But those who live in the area told me that they ate something from time to time, although I said about half of my mouth. I also stopped to eat at Daryus's, but when I entered I changed my mind and took only a rice, so as not to sit in front of an empty table, especially since I had invited someone.

Daryus are on the main boulevard Dacia, near the Belgian Embassy and opposite the much better known French Institute. Occupy a piece of a big house, I think there were some outbuildings there, I couldn't figure out what I got into. The living rooms are in the basement, a very large basement, in fact, arranged in a medieval way, probably a long time ago, because you can see the degradation of the passage of time everywhere.

In front, towards Dacia, they have a small covered terrace with a few tables, briefly arranged and poor. And they also have a terrace above the construction of the one about which I still don't realize what it was, maybe a garage. Small and that terrace, which can be reached on a narrow and steep staircase, completely dirty.

The menu is longer than I expected, Daryus is a full-fledged restaurant from this point of view, but after seeing how untidy everything is around, I didn't feel like eating there and I only took the rice, which he stayed on the plate too, because I didn't like it at all.

The only thing Daryus liked to see was an energetic and casual waitress, who smoked on the terrace side by side with customers.

Daryus is the only restaurant on the elegant and aristocratic Dacia Boulevard, between Calea Dorobantilor and Piata Gemeni, so it could receive the most refined clientele in the city, if it had something to receive them and what to give them to eat. But not the case, handcuffs a little & # 8230 (GB - September 2018)
