Quick to prepare lemon chicken. This recipe cheats a little and uses crackers to create the breadcrumb giving the chicken a satisfying crunch!

  • 400g chicken breast fillet, cut into strips
  • 100g peppered crackers (e.g. Ritz®)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (optional)

  1. In a glass dish, combine the lemon juice and curd and mix well. Add the chicken strips and toss to coat. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes in the fridge.
  2. Preheat oven to 200 C / Gas 6. Lightly grease a baking tray.
  3. Meanwhile, put the crackers into a plastic food bag and add the extra pepper if desired. Use a rolling pin to crush until fine breadcrumbs form. Add the lemon zest and shake to mix (make sure the bag is sealed of course).
  4. Drain the chicken and add it to the bag containing the breadcrumbs; shake the bag again to coat the chicken. Transfer the chicken strips to the prepared baking tray.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until the chicken is no longer pink in the centre and the breadcrumbs are golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve immediately with rice and some sweet chilli sauce. Delicious!


The longer you leave the chicken to marinate the better and the more lemony it will taste. Go for an hour or two if you have time.

Lemon Pepper Chicken

Forget store bought Lemon Pepper seasoning. The best way to make homemade Lemon Pepper Chicken is with lemon zest (no juice!), black pepper, garlic and olive oil. Simple, fragrant and delicious. Make this with any cut of chicken you want, grill it, bake it or sear it.

So simple and easy to make, you can make this tonight!

Sometimes, the simplest of ideas turn out to be annoyingly difficult to achieve. All I wanted was to make a homemade Lemon Pepper Chicken i.e. without using a packet of Lemon Pepper seasoning.

Making a homemade Lemon Pepper seasoning to sprinkle onto chicken requires slow baking lemon zest to dry it out before mixing with salt and pepper. So essentially making a flavoured salt.

But I wanted something I could make tonight, any night, on a whim. Because Lemon Pepper Chicken is definitely a midweek-meal-type-food, don’t you think? Something you should be able to make right now.

As it turns out, finding a short cut way of making a chicken with a real lemon flavour (i.e. not just lemon sour flavour) wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be because the actual lemon flavour in lemons is not in the juice, it’s in the zest. The juice is a bit lemony, but mostly it is sour. But Lemon Pepper Chicken is not sour or even tangy.

So anyway, I won’t take you through the various methods I attempted before landing on “the recipe”. Suffice to say the challenge was figuring out an easy way to get the zest and pepper to actually stick to the chicken, along with garlic (or onion) powder for extra flavour.

So this is how I do it: mix zest and olive oil to make a rub, slather it onto the chicken, then dip into flour seasoned with pepper, garlic (or onion) powder and salt.

Not a drop of lemon juice in sight. Only because I wanted to replicate store bought lemon pepper seasoning which is not tangy. You can definitely add a squeeze of lemon juice into the lemon zest slather (is that what it’s called??). But just a bit. Because I find that the key to getting the lemon zest to stick to the chicken is to only use a bit of oil. Too much oil and the zest just runs off.

I don’t use the lemon juice for the seasoning but what I like to do is slice it up and pan fry it, partly for garnish and also to give people the option to squeeze some over the chicken.

No lemon pepper seasoning? No problem

Not everyone has a bottle of lemon pepper mix lying around, but that shouldn’t keep you from making it. You can make your own by mixing up some coarsely ground pepper, sea salt (or better, garlic salt), and fresh lemon zest. You want to use lemon, though, not lime, which you get in India. If you can’t get lemon zest, add the rest of the ingredient and squeeze some fresh lime juice right at the end of cooking, when you take the pan off the heat.

I pulled out my new cast iron pan for this recipe and it worked rather well. This recipe also works great with fish and paneer. You can eat it with cauliflower rice or some keto bread as a side dish.

Lemon Pepper Chicken Marinade

  • 1/4 c lemon juice fresh is always best
  • 1/4 c olive oil
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 2 tsp oregano dried, or 2 tbsp minced fresh oregano
  • 4 tsp parsley dried, or 1/4 c diced fresh parsley
  • 4 tsp basil dried, or 1/4 c diced fresh basil
  • 4 chicken breasts or legs, wings, thighs, can add more of these so long as the marinade is able to coat all pieces generously

How To Make Lemon Pepper Chicken – Step-By-Step Instructions

Start with fresh organic chicken breasts. Cut chicken breasts horizontally to make 2 fillets.

Zest lemons. You need about 2 tablespoon lemon zest.

To chicken fillets add fresh lemon zest, fresh ground pepper, salt, minced garlic and onion powder (optional).

Rub chicken well to allow it to take in all the marinade and coat the marinade evenly.

Take plain flour in a wide bowl. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add onion powder is using now.

Dip chicken fillets in flour to get even coating on both sides. Shake off excess flour.

Heat olive oil (or butter) in a skillet.

Place breaded chicken in the skillet and cook on medium flame. Press the skillets with back of a flat spatula a couple of times to cook and brown evenly.

Cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown on both sides.

Transfer chicken from the skillet onto a plate. Wrap the entire plate in aluminum foil to keep chicken warm.

Into the same skillet add butter and stir until butter melts. Turn off heat. Add lemon juice a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.

Sprinkle chopped parsley over chicken breasts. Pour lemon pepper chicken sauce over crispy breaded chicken breasts just before serving.

Serve it over bed of rice or mix it up with pasta.

Slow Cooker Easy Lemon Pepper Chicken

Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of the crock pot. Evenly drizzle the lemon juice over the chicken. Sprinkle with the black pepper.

Cover the crock pot and cook on low heat for 4-6 hours or until the chicken is cooked through. Add additional lemon juice or water if the chicken looks dry. Serve the chicken hot or chill and use in salads or other recipes.

Easy Lemon Pepper Grilled Chicken Breast Recipe

Grilling boneless skinless chicken breast is much easier than you think. There are many ways to prepare it and hundreds of ways to serve it. One of the most popular flavor combinations is lemon pepper. These flavors perfectly accentuate the taste of the chicken and make an excellent meal.

Start by placing the chicken breast on a hard surface, cover with wax paper, and pound to 1/2″ thickness. This will ensure even grilling and tenderize the meat.

In a plastic ziplock bag, mix olive oil, pepper, lemon zest and salt, Add chicken and let marinade overnight if possible. But if you’re in a hurry, let in marinade for at least a 1/2 hour – you’ll still get the goodness!

Preheat your indoor grill for at least 5 minutes with the lid closed. Use highest setting if you have it. When grill is good and hot, add the chicken and close lid. Let cook for about 5 minutes and then check for doneness. There should not be any pink in the middle when done. You can also give the chicken a 1/4 turn halfway through cooking for crisscross grill marks.

Recipe suggestion: After plating, add a couple of avocado slices and a couple of spritzes of lime juice from a fresh lime. It make an absolutely wonderful meal!

This was excellent. I doubled the quantities for the seasonings which made it very peppery and Iɽ cut back on the pepper a little if doubling but it was still quite good. Had no trouble avoiding pith with a basic vegetable peeler - fresh lemons shouldn't be problematic.

I did not make this yet but had to comment about the lemon zest. A Microplane (long grater with handle) makes zesting a breese, and cleans up with a rinse of water. I love it! (also great with cheeses)

This is a real keeper. We baked it for 30 minutes and then broiled it for the last 10 minutes and added some wine and garlic powder to the pan juices and reduced the sauce. VOILA! a wonderful combination of easy great tastes. Next time, I would add fresh garlic to the rub.

I threw out my old lemon chicken recipe after making this. It is delicious and very easy. I just grated the lemon zest rather than chopping it.

simple recipe requiring very few ingredients that is virtually fool-proof and extremely tasty.

Good week night dinner. Much better than the bottled seasoning. The fresh lemon and pepper give it the tang you look forward to. I used a little extra fresh lemon juice and lightly buttered the chicken before rubbing w/ the lemon pepper mixture. Just to crisp up the skin. I would suggest broiling chicken for the last 10-15 minutes of cook time to ensure a crisp skin.

I didn't use a spice grinder, but instead finely chopped the lemon zest with a knife. I ground the pepper coursly in my pepper mill. I used all the juice from two lemons and used about 4 chicken breasts. I baked the chicken till brown and lightly crispy on the outside. I deglazed he pan with the lemon juice the chicken cooked in, along with some water, boiled to a nice brown gravy, which no one ate. My family and I enjoyed the tang of the lemon in the chicken while the lemon zest and pepper made for a sour/hot flavor on the outside of the chicken. Served with steamed green beans & garlice bread, this dish was a hit and is one I'll be sure to make again. Prep was easy, clean up minimal.

This one is a winner! I sprayed the chicken with olive oil during the roasting time and it came out even juicier!

The dish seemed flat. For me lemon chicken should really POP in your mouth. I altered the recipe by using all of the lemon zest, adding 4 cloves of garlic to the coffee grinder mix and deglazed the pan with 2 tablespoons each -lemon juice and water. Next time I will deglaze with lemon juice, white wine and a bit of butter.

If you’ve spent any time on my blog then you know that I kind of consider myself a chicken wing connoisseur. A quick search for “chicken wings” will show 16 different chicken wing recipes.

I will eat them any way I can get them. Dill Pickle Chicken Wings. Deep Fried Chicken Wings. Flats and drums. I love them sauced and I love them dry. Baked or fried. Like I said, anyway I can get them.

And now I’m adding a new recipe and cooking technique to the collection with these Grilled Lemon Pepper Chicken Wings. And you are going to love them.

What ingredients do you need?

CHICKEN WINGS: I like to buy the wings labeled “party wings”. These are wings that have already been separated into drums and flats. If you can only find regular chicken wings that is fine too. You can separate them yourself. If you’re unsure how, this video will show you.

LEMON PEPPER SEASONING: You may be wondering what is lemon pepper seasoning made of? It’s made of dried lemon peel, salt and pepper. You should be able to find it pretty easily in the spice aisle of your grocery store.

OIL: Something with a higher smoke point like canola, vegetable or avocado. Save the extra virgin olive oil for your homemade dressings.

BUTTER: After the chicken wings are grilled they are tossed in a lemon pepper butter sauce. Can’t lie, it’s pretty amazing.

LEMON: A fresh squeeze of lemon juice adds a citrusy brightness to the grilled wings.

How do you make lemon pepper wings from scratch?

Now that you know what ingredients you need lets talk about how you make them. It’s really easy!

STEP #1: Toss the chicken wings with oil and lemon pepper seasoning.

STEP #2: Heat a grill to medium heat. Place wings on the grill and cook for 20 minutes at 375 degrees. Turn and cook for another 15 – 20 minutes or until cooked through and desired crispiness is reached.

STEP #3: Combine melted butter with lemon pepper seasoning and drizzle over the top of the wings. Toss to coat. Serve immediately with lemon slices.

So if you’re keeping track that is 5 ingredients and 3 steps and you’ve got these Grilled Lemon Pepper Chicken wings on the table. Now if that is not an easy dinner I don’t know what is!

How to make lemon pepper wings in the air fryer?

These would be really easy to make in the air fryer! Simply put the lemon pepper seasoned wings in the basket, no need for them to be in a single layer, and cook them at 390 degrees for 30 minutes. Shake the basket after 15 minutes. Then shake it once more at 10 minutes. Then toss in the melted butter/lemon pepper mixture.

Baking instructions:

If you don’t have a grill or an air fryer, you can make baked lemon pepper chicken wings. To do that simply cook them on a wire rack on top of a baking sheet at 425 for 20 minutes. Turn and then bake for another 20 minutes. Then toss in the melted lemon pepper butter.

Des’ Tip: Cooking things on top of a wire cooling rack on top of a baking sheet allows the air to circulate around it as it cooks. This results in crispier food!
