Many Americans grew up drinking a glass of Tropicana orange juice every morning at the breakfast table or a bottle of Welch’s grape juice for school lunch. These juices may please our taste buds, but if you’ve ever taken the time to look at the labels, you might reconsider your beverage of choice.

Unfortunately, many store-bought juices are filled with added sugar, making them not as healthy as we thought. The only way to truly gain the full benefits of fruit and vegetables in liquid form is by drinking raw, unpasteurized juice. Because of this, juice bars, juice cleanses, and juicing in general is becoming more popular than ever.

Proponents of juice cleansing believe that the process will rid your body of toxins, as well as promoting weight loss and improving health generally. While consuming fruits and vegetables in whatever form certainly adds vitamins and minerals to your diet, many scientists and doctors consider "detoxing" a myth and counsel that water-fasting is more effective as a weight-loss aid. Whatever other effects they might have, though, the juices these places serve up are bright, bracing, and usually very tasty.

In 2013, we conducted a roundup of the 13 Best Juice Bars in America, and these establishments have only grown more popular since then. Now, with 12 more shops added to the list, we’re announcing our 2015 edition of the 25 Best Juice Bars in America.

In order to rank our list, we first took a close look 50 of the most well-known juice shops in the country and ranked them based on three categories: number of locations, menu variety, and healthiest juice options. Then, we narrowed it down to 25.

This year’s results included juice shops from all over the country, including KURE Juice Bar in Portland, Oregon, and dtox Juice in Atlanta, but our top spots are mostly located in New York and California.

All in all, a notable juice shop will serve a wide variety of the healthiest, most delicious juices and, whatever else they may do for your body, they'll leave you with a happy heart.

The 25 Best Smoothie and Juice Bar Franchises of 2021 (Updated Rankings)

Though juices have been around for centuries, and smoothies have been with us since the invention of the blender, specialist businesses serving them have taken off in a big way in the 21st century. As people have sought ways to enjoy the pleasures of novel takeaway food while improving their health, smoothie and juice bars have become widespread, with thousands set up across the USA and beyond.

While most food franchises appeal to the traditional takeaway market, with foods that are high in fat, salt, and carbohydrates, smoothie and juice bars are built on a very different sort of demand and cater to a very different customer base. Their customers are more likely to be seen in a Whole Foods store or a gym than a burger joint. Like any food outlet, they’re offering flavor, novelty, and convenience, but they’re also selling something more – health. Offering a way for customers to consume their way to a healthier life, smoothie and juice bars make it easier to be and feel healthy.

Part of their appeal is that they provide tasty solutions for a range of different wellness goals. There are drinks to support detoxification, energy boosting, immune support, and a host of other goals. Dieticians and gym instructors have recommended them as part of weight loss programs. There are a growing variety of products for all these aims, such as juice shots and the thicker smoothie bowls.

A broadening range of ingredients has added to the menu, incorporating vegetables, herbs, and spices as well as the more common fruits, and with supplements and superfoods playing an increasingly prominent part. Concerns about the sugar content of smoothies has pushed the most health-conscious consumers toward the novel end of the menu, as well as encouraging the growth of cold press juice, which uses different processes to achieve a lower sugar content.

This has added up to a good few years for the US juice and smoothie bar industry, which grew on average by 1.3% per year from 2015 to 2019. With a market size of $3 billion and 77,260 employees in 7,952 businesses, it’s an appealing area to get into. Several of the most prominent juice chains, such as Smoothie King and Jamba, are driven by franchising, allowing independent operators to buy into high visibility brands.

Americans are the biggest consumers of smoothies in the world, due to a society that is at once both consumer driven and increasingly health conscious. A survey of 30,000 consumers showed that 88% of those engaged in health and wellness activities are willing to spend more for nutritional foods and beverages. Unlike many other food franchises, smoothie and juice outlets don’t have to focus on keeping prices down to keep their customers.

One option to ensure a good customer base is for juice and smoothie bars to set up in or near fitness clubs and sports centers. This allows them to target a specific market sector in a way that few other franchises can.

Like all food businesses, juice and smoothie bars initially faced problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. 62% of those who responded to a Goodnature survey reported a drop in sales in late March. But even at that early stage, 17% said that they had seen an increase in sales. While apparently going against wider trends, this reflected the concerns of many consumers.

Health concerns over COVID led some consumers to spend more on health foods. Sales of organic food and drinks rose 25% in the 17 weeks to the end of June, driven by a desire for healthier eating to increase health, boost immune systems, and improve the chances of surviving an infection. This shift benefited some juice and smoothie chains. For example, Clean Juice announced the establishment of nine new outlets in August, while COVID was still raging wildly in many parts of America.

As food providers, juice and smoothie bars were often able to stay open during pandemic restrictions. Like other food providers, they leaned more heavily into takeaway and delivery options to keep business going, while focusing on increased hygiene and communication to make their businesses safe and ensure that customers felt secure.

Despite the impact of COVID and the subsequent economic downturn, the global smoothie market is expected to grow over the next few years, with a projected 7.7% growth by 2027, and stronger growth in the fruit-based part of the market than in dairy products. There’s arguably never been a better time to enter this sector, with vaccinations promising a return to something like business as usual, but with consumers still focused on their health and willing to spend more on it.

The clear market gap between juice and smoothie bars and other eateries has started to erode. Other food providers increasingly offer smoothies among their options, trying to lure people away. But this shift works in both directions, and some smoothie and juice bars have been able to increase their business by offering other foods for healthy eaters on the move. By opening up more options for juice bars, this has the potential to strengthen their expansion during an economic recovery.


Belgian waffles tend to be bigger and thicker with deeper grids meant to hold even more syrup, butter, and cream, so that right there is reason enough to avoid choosing this as a breakfast option when you find yourself out to eat at a diner. Plus, they often get loaded with sugar and sweet batters, so they can go from bad to worse. They're also loaded with simple carbs, which makes them too easy to digest and not very promising when it comes to keeping you full and focused.

Four classic pisco cocktail Recipes:

The Pisco Sour
Recipe from Raymi, New York

2 ounces pisco
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1 ounce egg white
Angostura bitters

Add pisco, lime juice, simple syrup and egg white to cocktail shaker. Dry shake to emulsify egg white. Add six ice cubes and vigorously shake for 15 seconds. Double strain and garnish cocktail with dashes of Angostura bitters.

Pisco Punch
Recipe from Raymi, New York

2 ounces pisco
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce pineapple simple syrup
3/4 ounce simple syrup
1 dash orange bitters

Add all ingredients to cocktail shaker with ice. Shake for 15 seconds. Double strain into an Old Fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange twist.

El Capitán
Recipe from Raymi, New York

2 ounces pisco
1 ounce sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters

Add all ingredient to mixing glass with ice. Stir for 20 seconds. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a lemon twist.

The Chilcano
Recipe from Raymi, New York

2 ounces pisco
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
1/4 ounce fresh ginger juice
3/4 ounce simple syrup
ginger ale
Angostura bitters

Add pisco, lime juice, ginger juice and simple syrup to cocktail shaker. Add 2 ice cubes and shake. Double strain into Collins glass and top with ginger ale. Garnish with a dash of Angostura bitters and a lime wheel.

Some historical facts & dates obtained from "Pisco Punch and Pisco Sour: Two Famous Cocktails" by Jose Antonio Schiaffino, which was published as an appendix in the Pisco Porton book. Schiaffino is an author, professor and owner of the Lima restaurant Malabar.

Perfect Lemon Bars

This is a lemon bar recipe for lemon lovers – and it just might be the only one you’ll ever need. It has a filling that is nice and thick, a great lemon flavor and a beautiful silky texture. The lemon custard is sitting on top of a layer of tender shortbread crust that is thick enough to hold up to it without getting soggy, even if you are planning to take the bars to a picnic the next day. These really are the perfect lemon bars because they are bursting with lemon flavor and are incredibly easy to make.

Many lemon bar recipes use sour cream or milk to round out the flavor of the filling and give it more body. This makes for a tasty lemon bar, but it also mellows the natural zestiness of the lemon a little bit. My favorite lemon curd recipe isn’t cut with butter or any other fat (besides the egg that thickens it) and it has plenty of body – and the filling for these bars works the same way. With just lemon juice, sugar and eggs you get a fantastic result.

You need to use fresh lemon juice to get the best results for this recipe, as store-bought lemon juice just doesn’t have the same brightness as a freshly juiced lemon. You’ll also want a little bit of fresh lemon zest to add to the crust, to give the bars a little extra lemon. Serve these bars chilled or at room temperature, and dust them with a little bit of confectioners’ sugar just before serving to give them a beautiful finished look.

Perfect Lemon Bars
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp lemon zest
1/2 cup butter, room temperature

4 large eggs
1 1/3 cups sugar
1 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed and strained

Preheat oven to 350F. Line 9×9-inch baking pan with aluminum foil.
Make the crust. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt and lemon zest. Cut butter into chunks and add to flour mixture. Blend in with an electric mixer at low speed until mixture forms coarse, sandy crumbs. Pour into pan and press mixture down (with your fingers or the back of a spoon) into an even layer.
Bake for 16-19 minutes, until just lightly browned around the edges.

While crust is baking, make filling. Whisk together all filling ingredients in a large bowl.
When the crust comes out of the oven and is still hot, pour in filling mixture.
Bake for about 20 minutes, or until filling is just set (it will still jiggle when the pan is gently moved). Filling will continue to set as the crust cools.
When bars are completely cooled, refrigerate for at least 1 hour before slicing.
Top slices with confectioners’ sugar to serve.

What is Sorrel Drink?

Although sorrel is mostly enjoyed during the holidays, I think this is the perfect time to get acquainted with this drink.

Sorrel Drink is dark red, a little sour, with a raspberry-like flavor made from the petals of sorrel plant (flor de Jamaica)” or hibiscus plant flower as popularly known in West Africa.

In Nigeria, it’s referred to as Zobo drink, in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean Island it’s known as Sorrel Drink. You can get the tea version in your grocery store, labeled hibiscus tea.

.25 oz rum
.25 oz vodka

Orange slice and cherry

Fill pint glass with ice. Pour the ingredients into the pint glass and pack with ice. Top if off with a dash of grenadine. Add the garnish of the orange slice and cherry.

2 lemon wedges
1.5 oz vodka
.25 oz Blue Curacao
1.5 oz sour mix

Lemon wedge
Half sugar rim

In a cocktail shaker, hand press the lemon wedges with muddler. Pack with ice to the top, then shake and strain into a martini glass. Rim half of the glass with sugar and add lemon wedge.

1 oz sour mix
2 oz orange juice
1 oz soda

In a cocktail shaker, hand press the orange wedges with muddler. Pack with ice to the top and shake & strain into a pint glass.

2 lemon wedges
1.5 oz vodka
.5 oz triple sec
1.5 oz sour mix

In a cocktail shaker, hand press the lemon wedges with muddler. Pack with ice to the top and shake & strain into a sugar rimmed martini glass. Garnish with lemon wedge.

Old fashioned

2 orange wedges
1.5 oz gin
.5 oz sweet vermouth
.5 oz Campari
1 oz soda

A strip of lemon zest

In a cocktail shaker, hand press orange wedge with a muddler. Pack with ice to the top and add all other ingredients. Shake & pour into an old fashioned glass with a strip of lemon zest for garnish.
