My vitamix was perfectly capable of blending all the ingredients quite well, so I didn't mix the almond milk and protein powder in a cup first. Also, I added stevia just to sweeten the smoothie up a bit since all my other ingredients were unsweetened.-09 Nov 2015

Matcha Pear Green Smoothie

St. Patrick’s Day will be here soon, and what better way to celebrate than with a healthy green smoothie, like this Matcha Pear Green Smoothie.

I bought some Matcha Green Tea Powder a few months ago, because of its antioxidant properties. I am trying to eat more healthy foods, and I have heard lots of people raving about the advantages of green tea powder, so I figured why not give it a try? I am not a big fan of green tea, so after I bought it the powder just ended up sitting in my pantry until I decided to use it in this smoothie.

I have been making healthy smoothies for breakfast regularly, and adding a little bit of Matcha Green Tea Powder to a smoothie is a great way to add some extra nutrition without changing the taste much at all. I made my smoothie with 1/2 a banana, 1/2 a pear and some spinach, all blended together with almond milk.

I have been experimenting with using pears in my smoothies this winter. They add a little more subtle flavor than apples and are more affordable than berries during the winter.

I’m glad I finally tried the Matcha Tea Powder! I was worried it would make the smoothie taste like tea, but the fruit flavors were much stronger than the tea flavor. And the bright green color from the tea powder is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day!

What is matcha?

First of all: what is matcha? Matcha is green tea powder. You may have seen matcha recipes making the rounds on Pinterest. Since matcha has a bright green color, it’s perfect as a natural green coloring for pies and cupcake icing. But of course, most people want to consume more matcha for the health benefits! Green tea has lots of nutrition benefits, including (source):

  • High in antioxidants

  • Helps burn fat

Where did pears come from?

It turns out, pears are thought to originate in China. Jules Janick of Perdue University wrote that pears were widely planted in Japan as guardians of property because they were thought to ward of evil. Now that’s a powerful tree and fruit. Kinda reminds me of how the fiber in this pear smoothie works like a prebiotic in our gut to ward off evil bacteria. Go pears!

How Does Matcha Tea Help In Losing Weight?

Matcha is very effective in helping you lose weight in two major ways:

  • Reduces body fat: Matcha contains lots of catechins, which are proven to be effective in reducing body fat to an appreciable level.
  • Reduces appetite: Matcha also contains lots of EGCG, which helps in reducing appetite by a significant margin, which means it can help you reduce food quantities and cravings.

Morning Matcha Smoothie Recipe | Vegan Superfood Smoothie

Rise and shine with this tasty, fuel-filled matcha smoothie! Naturally sweet, thanks to the ripe bananas and frozen pineapple, with NO added sugars or sweeteners. Plus, extra creamy and silky smooth with coconut milk as the liquid base! And, of course, a green smoothie wouldn’t be complete without a hearty dose of leafy greens.

This matcha smoothie recipe calls for 1 cup of spinach, fresh or frozen. But, don’t be afraid to go overboard really stuff that spinach in there… It’ll disappear once your smoothie’s blend it and you won’t even taste it. And, it’s a simple way to sneak more superfood greens into your day! But, spinach isn’t the only superfood green in this superfood smoothie…

The Magic of Matcha

Matcha green tea powder is an AMAZING superfood that acts as a detoxifier, boosts metabolism, and can even improve mood and concentration. Plus, it’s rich in essential vitamins and powerful antioxidants! In this matcha smoothie, it adds to the vibrant green color and the superfood nutrient load. But, you really won’t taste the matcha itself.

For the best tasting and most beneficial matcha, I do recommend splurging on a high-quality matcha. It has a naturally-sweeter taste, and a brighter color rather than a dull gray-green. Yes, it will be a bit more expensive. But, it’ll be worth the investment for the difference in taste and nutritional benefits. Especially if this matcha smoothie becomes part of your regular breakfast rotation!
