New York Hot Dog Onion Sauce Recipe

My family and I lived in the New York City area for a little over six months two years ago. In that short amount of time, I came to love all things New York. During our first few weeks to the city, my oldest two kiddos and I ended up feeling hungry on a beach in the Bronx. To assuage our hunger, I purchased my first authentic New York style hot dog complete with sauerkraut and onion sauce from a little stand on the boardwalk. So that I can make my own simple dog at home, I created my own delicious New York style hot dog onion sauce recipe. Add a little brown mustard to a kosher hot dog along with the onion sauce and some sauerkraut and you will feel like you are right in the city!

  • 2 medium sweet onions
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/4 cup of ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 dash of hot sauce
  1. Cut the onions in small slices.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the onions to the skillet.
  4. Cook the onions for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Stir occasionally.
  5. Add the water, ketchup, brown sugar, chili powder, hot sauce, and cinnamon to the skillet.
  6. Stir to combine thoroughly.
  7. Cook for another 10 minutes or until the water has reduced.
  8. Serve the onion sauce as a topping for a kosher hot dog along with some sauerkraut and brown mustard.
  9. Refrigerate any uneaten New York hot dog onion sauce.

Love has many faces. Love sometimes smiles, sometimes laughs, sometimes cries, and sometimes she, like an angry wild cat, grimaces, hisses and after a moment rushes in your face to scratch out your eyes. Fear this kind of love.
